CERVICAL SCREENING
INCENTIVE
Introduced in 2001 the cervical screening incentive is to assist general
practices to increase rates of participation of female patients in the National
Cervical Screening Program.
The aim
of the incentive is to encourage general practitioners to target “at risk”
clients for development of cervical cancer, and in the long term reduce advanced
cervical cancer by early detection and treatment. High risk being a woman
between ages 20 to 69 who have not had a cervical screen in the last 4 years
What does my practice
have to do to claim item numbers for cervical screening?
The
practice must sign on to the National Cervical Screening Program. A one off sign
on payment is made to the practice when they sign on to the National Cervical
Screening Program. When the practice signs on they agree to participate in the
cervical screening incentive, to provide practice details to the state screening
registers, to receive information from the registers and agree to the state
screening register supplying information to the HIC.
What are the payments for cervical screening item
numbers?
Accredited practices that register will receive a one off payment of $0.25 per
SWPE (PIP payment). Approx $250.00 per FTE GP.
Practices
that have signed on will then receive a service incentive payment (SIP payment)
for every individual cervical screen on woman between 20-69 years who have not
had a cervical smear within the last four years.
The SIP of $35.00 is received when each high
risk cervical screening is attended.
What is the Cervical Screening Outcome Payment?
The cervical screening outcome payment commenced in August 2003 and is a payment
to participating PIP practices where specified proportions of female patient’s
aged between 20 to 69 years have been screened over the previous two years.
When 70%
of women attending a practice have received a cervical screening over the last
twelve month period a practice that is signed on will receive an outcome
payment.
NB The outcome payment is presently under review by the Department of
Health and Aging.
