Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Initiatives

The 2001 Census data indicates that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of the Dubbo/Plains Division of General Practice is 8,555. This represents 8.9% 0f the total population, which is significantly higher that the State percentage of 1.8%.  

The Division aims to support GPs in the provision of culturally appropriate services by:

  • Reorient general practice to record Aboriginality

  • Provide resources to GPs and staff on cultural awareness

  • Ensure GP are aware and up to date with Commonwealth initiatives supporting service provision

Commonwealth initiatives supporting service provision to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

 Other Divisional Initiatives

  • Aboriginal ‘Thubbo’ Asthma Clinic

  • From July 2004 the Division facilitated a 3 day Asthma Education for Practice Support Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers
