Psychiatrist

Dr Johnston will provide a presentation and discussion aimed at GPs in smaller centres. This comprehensive discussion will address issues regarding the MHECRAP videoconferencing service and how to utilise it; the Mental Health Act and the process of detaining and admitting patients involuntarily; local issues with the Mental Health Act; and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Police Ambulance and Health, and how this affects patient transfers locally. Dr Johnston will also discuss the management of Severe Behavioural Disturbance including the identification of risk-factors and escalation, management of the environment, de-escalation strategies, restraint, sedation, monitoring and use of the NSW Health Mental Health for Emergency Department’s 2009 ‘Red Book’.

This workshop is aimed at GPs, however, interested Mental Health Workers and Hospital Nurses are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

• Use multiple strategies for dealing with severe behavioural disturbance.
• Be familiar with medication strategies for behavioural control in severe behavioural disturbance.
• Be familiar with placing patients under the Mental Health Act.
• Understand the roles of multiple agencies in managing Emergency Mental Health presentations.
• Understand the use of sedation protocols for oral and parenteral sedation.
• Monitor patients post-sedation.
