Cultural Awareness Training – Has your practice completed it?

The RACGP training is available at  http://www.gplearning.com.au/

As per the guidelines, it is a requirement of signing on to the PIP Indigenous Health Incentive that practices undertake cultural awareness training within 12 months of joining the incentive, unless appropriate training has already been undertaken in the previous 12 months.

Practices which signed on to the PIP IHI before April 2011, that is before the RACGP online cultural awareness training was available, have until April 2012 to complete it. Practices which signed on after April 2011 have 12 months from when they signed on.
As part of the normal auditing process, Medicare Australia will assess practices against the requirement to have completed cultural awareness training and may take action to recover funds paid to ineligible practices.

Medicare undertakes audits on a certain percentage of practices, which is agreed annually with the Department of Health and Ageing. The audits are both random and targeted. The targeted audits may include those with unusual statistics.

If you have any questions or you need assistance with the training please contact Melissa Mills or Jelneetah Fogg on 0268 840197

INDIGENOUS HEALTH INCENTIVE – CHANGE TO REGISTRATION PROCESS

From 1 July 2011, practices must submit a PIP Indigenous Health Incentive patient consent form when registering a patient. Previously, practices needed to send only the patient registration form. From 1 July, the registration form and the patient consent form must be submitted. This is a requirement for all practices, regardless of how they currently submit forms.  Patient consent forms signed before 1 July 2011 do not need to be submitted to Medicare Australia for registration, but will need to be kept on file at the practice for auditing purposes.

PIP Indigenous Health Incentive

To register for the PIP Indigenous Health Incentive, at least two staff members from a practice (one of whom must be a GP) are required to complete appropriate cultural awareness training within 12 months of the practice signing on to the incentive. To assist practices to meet this requirement, the RACGP, funded by the Department of Health and Ageing, is developing an online introduction to cultural awareness. The 3 hour online activity will be offered free of charge to practice teams signing up for the Indigenous Health Incentive (including GPs, practice managers, practice nurses, medical receptionists, health workers and other staff) and offered through the RACGP’s gplearning platform. As the RACGP online activity will be available from March 2011, the 12 month time period requirement has been modified. Practices already signed on to the Indigenous Health Incentive can now complete their cultural awareness education within 12 months of the RACGP online cultural awareness activity becoming available. Practices that sign on after the RACGP activity becomes available will have 12 months from their sign-on date to meet the cultural awareness training requirement.
